Neil and Judy Baird, Highland
Odyssey - Admiral 38'
Despite the fact that Highland Odyssey is now
for sale (Judy now wants to do other things
than sail in the Caribbean during our cold
Canadian winters), I continue to think that
buying an Admiral 38 three years ago has been
an experience of a lifetime. It all started
with a wonderful three-month visit to South
Africa, where we were treated so well by the
Admiral staff and had several amazing trips
into the interior and along the south coast of
this beautiful country.
When the boat was completed we then had an
equally great experience sailing it across the
Atlantic with a very experienced skipper. How
else could one get a better training course
than that, I ask? And visiting the fascinating
island of St Helena on the way over is
something few people will ever be able to tell
their grandchildren about.
Since that first six-week trip, we have now
sailed on Highland Odyssey for three years,
enjoying all of the eastern Caribbean and the
Bahamas. We have now logged close to 10,000
miles on her, in fact. While we've had a
few problems along the way - what boat
doesn't? - they have all been overcome and
I still say that the Admiral 38 is the best
catamaran of its size that money can buy. I
describe it as "The CRV of
Catamarans".
In other words, you can buy a bigger and
better catamaran for a whole lot more, but if
you want a reliable catamaran that has all the
extras that one could ever want, with a
handsome look and at a reasonable price, the
Admiral 38 is very hard to beat. She is now
sitting at a dock in Fort Lauderdale, waiting
for another lucky owner to enjoy -probably for
many more years to come.
All the best
Neil
